A Recent FMCSA Audit of Two MEs Brought Serious Consequences

Over 15,000 Truck Drivers at Risk of CDL Downgrades After FMCSA Invalidates Medical Certificates from Two Houston Doctors

On Friday, April 11, the FMCSA announced that Medical Examiner’s Certificates (MECs) provided by Dr. Jenny Le and Dr. Dustin Mai between March 2023 and March 2025 are no longer valid. The agency cited non-compliance with federal physical qualification examination standards as the reason for the action.

In total, 15,225 commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers are impacted by the decision.

“While this action does not immediately prevent a driver from operating a CMV, those who received MECs from Dr. Le or Dr. Mai must obtain a new certificate by May 10, 2025,” the FMCSA said. Failure to obtain a new MEC by the deadline will result in the state drivers licensing agency initiating a CDL downgrade process.

This action follows a joint investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security. The probe was launched after FMCSA observed an unusually high number of physical exams conducted by the two physicians.
