NRCME to State Reporting

CDL Drivers No Longer Required to Submit

Their Medical Certificate

Medical examiners are being caught offguard when drivers relay the information they received from their state driver’s licensing agency (SDLA). The State is no longer allowing drivers to submit their new medical certificates.

Why?

The State has made the change to the new reporting system, allowing the National Registry to electronicly transmit the driver's medical certificate information directly to the State. This information is available on the Commercial Drivers License Information System (CDLIS).

By June 23, 2025, all States must have adopted this new system.

For more details on this topic, please read the newsletter we sent on 4/7/25 titled " Upcoming electronic transmission requirements from FMCSA".

What does this mean for the medical examiner?

The ME should continue doing what they have always done - submit the results of all CLP/CDL applicants/holders to the National Registry by midnight of the following calendar day.

Verify the information you are submitting is correct.

If the driver’s identifying information (i.e., name, date of birth, license number and State) is missing or incorrect, the system will not be able to match the certificate information to the driver’s CDLIS record.

The ME will receive an email from the NRCME, notifying them of this error. The National Registry cannot electronically submit the driver's information to the SDLA until the errors have been corrected.

How do I correct the errors?

Login to your National Registry account. Just to the right of your name and NR# is the section "My Tasks". All submission errors will be listed here.

We suggest first comparing the information you have on the exam documents with the information you entered into the National Registry. If you cannot find any discrepancies, you will likely need to contact the driver.

There have been many reports of MEs not finding an error.

When this is the case, simply resubmit the information. So far, this seems to have worked.
